EVEREST - May 5, 1999

Everest, the world's highest peak, at 8 848m, casts its shadow over Earth's 6 billion inhabitants. Only a few hundred mountaineers have managed to cast their own shadows on its summit. Bernard is now one of them. He made a first try in the fall of 1997, but severe weather conditions prevented all climbers from reaching the summit that season.

In the spring of 1999, with his climbing companion Dorjee Sherpa, Bernard tried again, and this time succeeded. At 12:10 p.m. on May 5, 1999 (Nepal time), Nathalie received a walkie-talkie call at the base camp, announcing: "Nathalie, Summit, Summit, Summit!!!"
