KHATANGA - Spring 1994

A tiny Siberian town, located at the 75th parallel, Khatanga was one stop on Bernard's expedition to the North Pole. After a 13-hour flight from St. Petersburg in a windowless cargo plane, Bernard descended to find a tiny bit of the wild and vast Siberian expanses. Just a few kilometres from the town are a number of small villages inhabited by local native people called Dolgane.

The Dolgane are hunters and reindeer breeders, dressed in furs to survive the bitter winters and long polar nights. From Khatanga, an Antonov jet took the group of skiers to a floating Russian base in the midst of the Arctic Ocean. Imagine! A jet weighing close to 50 tonnes landing on the ice!
